Based on T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," and with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, CATS won seven Tony awards in 1983, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Lighting and Best Costumes. While Webber's hit, "Memory," is one of the most recognized songs in both theater and pop culture.
CATS follows the journey of a ramshackle group of felines who reunite once a year to celebrate their own special traits and the heritage of the "Jellicle Cat" tribe. Upon the journey, audience members are treated to the antics of "The Old Gumbie Cat," "The Rum Tum Tugger" and "Grizabella, the Glamour Cat," among others. Each is awaiting a chance to perform at the Jellicle Ball, where one lucky feline will have the chance to be reborn.
With song, dance and special effects, CATS is musical theater at its finest. The numbers don't lie.
